Looking for a minimalist living room with dining area that doesn’t feel like furniture squeezed into one room? Start with a round table, a simple sofa or matching colors across both spaces.
These ideas give you plenty to work with, from small dining corners to open layouts with room between them.
You can keep things mostly neutral or bring in a little green. There are also two living-room-only views included for their lighting and storage ideas, rather than a complete dining layout.
Living and Dining Room Ideas Worth Saving
cream sofa and black dining set
We’re starting off strong with this cream sofa and black dining set. I love how little there is on the walls.
The slim floor lamp gives the seating corner its own pool of light.

Try a separate pale rug beneath each furniture group, like the ones here, if you want to mark out both areas without a divider.
round tables and a gray corner sofa
How cute are these matching table shapes? The dining table and coffee table both have round tops with ridged bases.
A gray corner sofa sits near the windows while the dining chairs tuck into the foreground.

Keep your tabletop decorations simple with a small vase and bowl to follow this look.
three black pendants
The lights may just be my favorite part of this room. Three black pendants hang above the rectangular dining table, with a tan corner sofa farther back by the windows.
I love the tall, winding branches on the table too. Try one branch arrangement instead of several little decorations if you like this spare look.
white dome lights and curved chairs
I am obsessed with these white dome lights. They’re so pretty above the dining table, especially with the curved chair backs and round placemats underneath.
The pale sofa faces away from the table, giving the two areas different directions. Keep that arrangement in mind if you don’t want your seating facing the dinner dishes.
glowing slats behind the tv
Don’t want to add lots of wall decor? This living-room view offers another idea.
A warm glow runs along the top and left side of the slatted TV wall, with more light beneath the long floating cabinet.
No dining area is visible here. For a shared room, you could repeat the cabinet’s pale brown color in your dining furniture.
colorful chairs and open shelves
Who says you have to leave out color? I love the blue-green dining chair and the little colorful prints around the TV.
The low gray sofa keeps the middle of this room fairly open.
This one has more books and decorations than the quieter rooms here. Borrow just the mismatched chairs if you want a smaller splash of color.
black dining table and pale walls
If you are looking for a simple color combination, this one is for you. A black dining table sits beside the pale kitchen, with a light gray sofa closer to the camera.
The black coffee table repeats the dining furniture’s color. Those open-frame pendant lights are a lovely finishing touch.
a round rug beneath the table
This dining corner may just be one of my favorites. I love the round table sitting inside the rings of the rug.
The tiered pendant above it is just as pretty.
Try chairs with pale seats to follow this mix of dark brown furniture and lighter details. A single tall vase is plenty for the center.

a long cushioned dining bench
If you’re looking for a different way to arrange your dining seats, take a look at this long gray bench. The table sits right in front of it, with individual chairs along the opposite side.
The shelf above holds a row of small frames. Keep that display sparse if you want the wall to stay simple.
open floor and tall plants
Don’t want to fill every corner? No problem!
This room leaves a broad stretch of floor between the pale sofa on the left and the partly visible dining table on the right.
The tall plants are my favorite detail. Try one beside your seating or dining area rather than adding another small piece of furniture.
a slatted divider with little shelves
How pretty is this divider? The tall slats separate the oval dining table from the pale seating beyond, with a narrow column of display shelves along one side.

I especially love the rounded dining chairs beside the veined tabletop. If you’re considering a divider, this is a useful example of one you can still see through.
gray seating and a slim pendant
If you love a darker room without lots of decorations, save this one. The long gray sofa and rug lead toward a black dining table by the curtains.
There’s a slim pendant above the table rather than a large shade. I’d keep that detail if you want the dining end to look just as pared back as the seating.
white cupboards and display niches
This is such a pretty storage idea. White cupboard fronts surround two brown-backed display niches, with pale books, bowls and vases on the shelves.
Only the living area is shown here, so there’s no dining placement to copy. You could adapt this storage style to a shared room and reserve some closed cupboards for tableware.
a dining bench behind the sofa
I love this back-to-back arrangement. A high-backed dining bench sits directly behind the gray sofa, with a small round table on one side and a coffee table on the other.
The basket beneath the bench is a cute extra detail. Try a similar setup if your room allows enough space to pull out the dining chairs.
dinner beside the windows
That view is gorgeous, but there’s a furniture idea worth saving too. The rectangular dining table sits by the tall windows while a low round coffee table serves the sofa.
The dark brown tables look lovely together. You don’t need a skyline to try that pairing in your own room.
a wide arch and green accents
This wide arch is such a beautiful part of the room. Through it, you can see two pale chairs around a low table and a dining area farther back.
I love the green cushions on the built-in bench at the left. For a smaller change, try repeating that color in a dining chair rather than taking on an architectural project.
green sofa and a round dark table
I am obsessed with this green sofa. It gives the room a little color without adding a busy pattern.
The round dark dining table sits beside it with pale curved-back chairs.

Keep the white shelving lightly decorated if you want to follow this look. The single vase on the table is a lovely place to stop.
a gallery wall in a narrow room
Love framed pictures but still want simple furniture? This room gives you both.
Black-and-white artwork hangs above a gray sofa, with a small dining table at the far end.
The long TV cabinet leaves the floor beneath it visible. For a quieter version, you could use fewer frames while keeping the same furniture arrangement.
clear chairs and botanical prints
How cute is this little dining spot? The clear chairs and transparent round tabletop let you see the rug underneath.
Behind them, botanical prints hang above a gray sofa.
There are more patterns and accessories here than in the simplest rooms on this list. I’d borrow the clear dining set if you want that look with fewer decorations.
paneled storage and a ridged table
Last but definitely not least, we have this pale seating area with brown paneled storage. I love the rounded corners on the coffee table and the ridged base of the dining table behind it.
The slim hanging light keeps the dining setup simple. Try one dark vase with a few branches if you want to follow the tabletop styling.
