Looking for garage storage ideas for sports equipment that go beyond a bin full of balls? Wall baskets, racket hooks and separate shoe cubbies give you plenty to work with.
These setups range from a small rack beside the door to a whole wall devoted to gear.
You can keep it simple or go all out. Start with the equipment you reach for most, then decide what belongs on hooks, in baskets or behind closed doors.
Sports equipment storage ideas worth saving
rows of ball baskets
We’re starting off strong with these wall-mounted ball baskets. I love how you can see every basketball and soccer ball instead of digging through one big container.
Try a separate row for each type of ball. Keep your most-used ones on a shelf you can comfortably reach.
bikes stacked up the wall
Have more bikes than floor space? This setup takes them up the wall in staggered rows, with helmets on little shelves to the side.
The orange and pale blue bikes look so good against the white wall. If you try a similar arrangement, check the rack ratings and leave clearance for your garage door.
a spot for every sport
I am obsessed with how this wall separates everything. Bats and rackets hang inside tall open compartments while balls sit in baskets below.
Even the scooters have their own little spots.
The lighting along the upper shelves is a lovely extra touch. Try grouping your gear by sport if you want to follow this layout.
a stand for hockey gear
How fun is this hockey setup? The helmet sits at the top with the shoulder pads underneath, almost like a player waiting to get dressed!
The protective pads hang from the stand while the red-and-blue gloves sit at its base. This is a useful arrangement to consider if you want to keep one hockey kit together rather than spread across several shelves.
a compact rack by the door
If you are looking for something that fits into a smaller spot, this one is for you. The deep bottom basket holds balls while the shallow shelf above has skates and a baseball glove.
I especially love the side storage for rackets and sticks. It gives those awkward long pieces somewhere to go without taking over another corner.
golf bags behind doors
Don’t want all your equipment on display? No problem! This cabinet keeps golf bags upright below shelves of shoes and smaller supplies.
Leave a tall section open inside your own cabinet for clubs. Baskets on the upper shelves would be a good addition for loose golf accessories.

a tall tower of baskets
This is another pretty straightforward way to sort a big collection of balls. The white baskets run almost the full height of the rack, with bats and a skateboard tucked along the side.
Keep the everyday favorites down low if younger players need to reach them. The upper baskets could hold lighter gear you use less often.
kayak above and bike below
That red kayak is hard to miss! It hangs overhead while a mint-colored bike sits vertically beside the tall cabinet.
If bulky water-sports gear is taking over your floor, an overhead system is worth considering. Choose one rated for your equipment and check both the ceiling attachment requirements and garage-door clearance.
open cubbies and side hooks
If you are looking for lots of little storage spots, then this one is for you. There are helmets across the top, shoes and pads inside the cubbies and basketballs along the bottom.
I love the extra hanging space on the outside edge. Try reserving side hooks for the pieces that don’t fit neatly on a shelf.
skis beside a bench
The ski fans are going to love this! Upright skis fill the corner while helmets hang beneath open cubbies on the neighboring wall.
The bench is the detail I’d borrow for a garage gear station. Add one beside your storage if you want somewhere to sit while changing footwear.
wall grids and overhead bins
This green wall makes the black storage grids stand out so nicely. Rackets, skateboards, shoes and a bike each have their own section, with matching gray bins above.
You don’t have to copy the whole wall. Start with one grid for your loose equipment, then add another if your collection grows.
a black pegboard display
I am obsessed with this black pegboard wall. The coral-colored bike rims and pale blue bike look so cute against it, especially with the small plant shelves nearby.
Try mixing a few decorative touches into your gear wall if you like this look. Just use bike supports designed for the load rather than ordinary accessory pegs.
separate slots for sticks and bats
Tired of long equipment leaning into one big pile? This white wall rack separates bats, lacrosse sticks and a racket into individual spots.
I like how the slim holders leave the equipment visible. Look for a rack with spacing that suits the heads and handles of the pieces you actually own.
rackets above little baskets
Don’t want to go overboard with shelves? No problem! A row of racket hooks and two baskets make this a simple setup to borrow.
The tennis balls have their own basket instead of getting mixed in with the gloves. Add small labels like these if you want to make the sorting extra clear.
shoe cubbies and upper lockers
How satisfying are these rows of shoes? Each pair has its own cubby, with gray lockers above and bags lined up across the top.
This room-style setup could inspire a garage storage corner if footwear is your biggest problem. I’d start with the shoe cubbies before adding the upper cabinets.

fishing rods and small drawers
This fishing station may just be one of my favorites here. The rods stand upright across a tall open frame, with a narrow stack of drawers down one side.
Those drawers would be useful for separating small fishing accessories. Measure your longest rods first if you’re planning a similar spot.
closed gray-green cabinets
Prefer a garage that doesn’t put everything on display? These gray-green cabinets offer a much quieter look than the open racks above.

The doors are closed, so this photo doesn’t show a sports-specific interior. Borrow the exterior idea, then plan shelves or tall compartments around your own equipment rather than assuming it will all fit.

scooters on a diagonal rack
How clever is this arrangement? Scooters follow a diagonal rack down the wall, with skateboards near the top.
The staggered positions give the handlebars separate spaces. If you’re choosing a scooter rack, check that its hooks suit your scooters and leave enough room to lift each one off.
hanging clothes and wire drawers
This is a lovely way to bring clothing and equipment into the same storage spot. Dark clothing hangs beneath the top shelf, with wire baskets below and large gear bags at floor level.

Try assigning a column of baskets to each player. That would give everyone a clear place for their smaller pieces without needing separate cabinets.
paddles above the adventure gear
Last but definitely not least, we have this outdoor gear wall. I love the two paddles stored horizontally above the backpacks.
The coolers fit below while shelving holds bins and footwear on either side.
Keep related gear together if you want to borrow this arrangement. A backpack, footwear and activity bin in the same section would make a useful starting point.
