Looking for garage shelving ideas for narrow spaces? Start with the walls before giving up more parking room.

High shelves, slim storage towers and rows of neatly arranged bins give you plenty to work with. There are a few wall-storage alternatives here too.

You can keep things simple or give a whole wall a makeover. Just measure your available depth first, including room for car doors and the garage door to move.

Garage shelving and storage ideas worth saving

wire shelves and hanging hooks

We’re starting off strong with these open shelves against a red wall. Tool bags sit up top while smaller gardening supplies have their own space below.

I especially love the hooks holding the coiled cords beneath the shelves.

Leave a gap in your lower shelving if you need a spot for a tall bin like this one.

bins above the car

Don’t have much wall space left? Look up!

This ceiling-mounted rack holds clear bins above the parked car, with holiday decorations grouped toward one end.

For a similar setup, check the rack’s load rating and ceiling attachment requirements. Leave clearance for the vehicle and the full travel of your garage door.

black shelves with yellow accents

I love how the yellow bin lids match the tools on these black shelves. The long rows give tool cases, small drawers and larger boxes separate places without adding legs along the floor.

Try grouping your cases by size so you can see the smaller ones rather than hiding them behind big bins.

a tall frame in progress

This one is still a work in progress, not a finished shelving unit. The tall frame runs along a short wall beside an opening, showing a possible spot to plan vertical storage.

If you’re considering something similar, measure the passage first. The photo alone doesn’t provide a shelf-building or attachment plan.

simple black slatwall shelves

Don’t want to cover the whole wall with storage? No problem!

These three black shelves keep things simple against white slatwall. I love the different lengths.

Choose shelf sizes around what you actually need to store rather than filling every available slot.

clear bins with front labels

How satisfying is this little storage station? Clear bins fill the freestanding rack beside the freezer, with labels facing forward.

Smaller containers share a shelf instead of getting lost between the larger ones.

Give your everyday categories their own bins. Even simple handwritten labels can make the arrangement easier to follow.

long open shelf bays

If you’re looking for an open layout without lots of little compartments, this one is for you. Long shelves run along the unfinished wall, with upright supports dividing them into wide sections.

For a narrow garage, adapt the depth to your walkway rather than copying these proportions exactly.

shelves above the wagon

This may just be one of my favorite arrangements here. Three shelf rows hold bins and bags while a folding wagon and canister vacuum sit underneath.

Start your lowest shelf above the taller items you need to park below. That open space is worth planning before you settle on shelf heights.

pegboard with a little personality

Who says your tool wall can’t have pictures too? I love the framed prints mixed in with the tools, shallow shelves and baskets.

Balls sit on the right while small bottles line the center.

Try a few narrow shelves on pegboard if your storage is mostly little items rather than oversized tubs.

a shelf around the corner

Don’t want shelving all the way down your walls? This high shelf follows the corner while leaving most of the wall below open.

There’s a small cabinet underneath and a shorter shelf on the left.

Use this as layout inspiration for items you reach for less often. Plan how you’ll safely access them before choosing the height.

bike rails in a narrow passage

This is a hallway storage example rather than garage shelving, but the wall-mounted arrangement is worth a look. Bikes, helmets and bags share one tall section beside the doors.

For a garage version, measure how far the handlebars project into your route. Getting something off the floor doesn’t always mean it takes up less room.

a rolling base detail

Here’s a closer look at a rolling base, not a complete shelf. The underside shows four casters attached across two pale crosspieces.

If you want movable garage storage, use this as a detail to discuss when choosing a suitable unit. The image doesn’t establish its load capacity or how a shelving tower would attach.

a single column of bins

How cute is this narrow storage tower? Black bins with red lids sit in individual openings, with casters beneath the frame. A coiled hose hangs alongside it.

I’d keep the one-bin-wide layout for a small wall section. If you choose a tall rolling unit, check its stability guidance and use locking casters.

closed doors for a clean look

Don’t want your supplies on display? These tall gray cabinets give you a different direction from open shelving.

The plain fronts and long silver-colored handles look so neat together.

The inside layout isn’t visible here. For your own version, ask about adjustable shelves and check that the doors can open beside your parked car.

a black frame with pale shelves

I love this simple black-and-pale combination. The tall open frame has widely spaced shelf levels without extra drawers or doors.

Before choosing a unit this tall, check the space beneath your garage door tracks. Keep any nearby equipment’s required service clearance open too.

high bins and sports baskets

The sports gear gets its own wall here! Gray bins line the high shelf while baskets and hooks below hold shoes, balls, rackets and skateboards.

There’s even a bike hanging in the middle.

Try separating the occasional-use bins from the gear you grab regularly, just like this arrangement.

one shelf above the tools

If you’re looking for a way to store long tools without adding deep lower shelves, this one is for you. A high white shelf runs above ladders, cords and hanging tools.

I especially love how the white pegboard blends into the wall. Keep the lower area for hanging storage if that’s where you need extra passing room.

shallow shelves beside the door

This is such a nice use of the wall beside the garage door. The shelves share one tall backing panel, with small parts drawers in the middle and matching black bins below.

Choose shallow organizers for a similar spot. Check the moving door and hardware before deciding how far the shelves can project.

lit shelves over a tool bench

If you want to go all out with a workshop wall, there’s plenty to love here. Light strips run beneath the upper shelves, above rows of hanging tools and a long worktop.

The full setup is more involved than a few shelves. For a smaller version, I’d borrow the lit upper shelf and one section of tool storage.

open shelves with slatted surfaces

Last but definitely not least, we have these tall shelves with spaced slats. The pale frame runs along the garage wall, leaving the center floor open.

Use bins to keep little items from slipping between the slats. I’d measure the largest container first so the shelf spacing works for what you already own.
