Looking for groundhog day activities with a little more than a coloring page? Think big-toothed puppets, shadow pictures and a class vote with everyone’s name on it.
These ideas include groundhog crafts plus a few broader nature activities you could use alongside them.
You can keep things simple or go all out with a pretend animal den.
Groundhog Day Crafts and Activities to Try
big-eyed bag puppet
We’re starting off strong with this super cute groundhog puppet. I love the oversized eyes and those two white teeth peeking out beneath the nose.
Give your version little brown paws and a strip of green grass along the bottom. The short snips along the grass are a lovely finishing touch.
animal track matching
Who left those footprints? These cards pair woodland animals with pictures of their tracks, including a deer, owl and squirrel.
This isn’t a groundhog-specific set, but you could use it as a related nature game. Ask children to find the matching animal and track cards, then compare the different shapes.
sticky-note predictions
How cute is this giant smiling groundhog? The bright pink notes hold everyone’s predictions around the drawing, with a big yellow sun up in the corner.
Try giving each child a note for their name and a yes or no answer. Keep the question at the top so your class knows exactly what they’re voting on.
groundhog in a green cup
If you are looking for a small craft without lots of extra decoration, this one is for you. A tan groundhog peeks above a green cup with a scalloped grass edge.
For a little pretend play, you could have your groundhog hide inside the cup before coming out to look around.
standing groundhogs and shadows
I love these standing groundhogs with their dark silhouettes stretching out in front. The white marks around each shape make the shadow pictures especially clear.
Pair your finished artwork with a separate flashlight activity. Let children see what happens to a real shadow when you move the light.
animal homes display
There is so much to look at here! The open-front display has little animal spaces, a tall leafy tree and a blue section with sea creatures.
This is a broader animal-home project rather than a groundhog model. If you want to connect the idea to your theme, you could make a separate groundhog burrow display instead of copying these habitats.
yes and no voting cards
Don’t want to draw a whole poster? This card layout gives you another way to collect predictions.
The green thumbs-up and red thumbs-down symbols separate the two choices.
Have children place their names beneath their answer. Explain that the winter and spring predictions are part of Groundhog Day folklore, not a reliable weather forecast.
leaf-covered pretend den
If you love a bigger classroom project, take a look at this leafy pretend den. Orange, brown and green leaves cover the outside, with pinecones and short logs around the opening.
It isn’t a model of a groundhog burrow, but it could inspire an animal-themed pretend-play corner. I’d keep the colorful painted leaves.
small medium and large
These little groundhogs are so cute lined up by size. The same character appears beneath the headings small, medium and large.
Try mixing up the pictures before children put them in order. You could ask them to point to the smallest one first.
groundhog face mask
How adorable is that oversized nose? This brown face mask has round ears, white eye surrounds and two long front teeth.
A stick attached near the lower-left edge extends downward.
If you’re making your own, have an adult help with the eye openings. Keep those wonderfully big teeth for the same playful look.
pink shape match
The little groundhog peeking over a mound with a pink heart on it may just be my favorite card here. The set also includes a pink star and square, with smaller picture cards beside the larger ones.
Invite children to name each shape before finding its partner. There’s no need to turn it into a race.
color-your-own crown
I am obsessed with this sweet groundhog crown. The big face peeks over the band while flowers, grass and a tree fill the space below.
Let children add their own little weather drawings around the band. A yellow sun like this one is such a cute touch.
bird life cycle wheel
Those tiny chicks are adorable! This wheel shows a bird’s life cycle, from eggs through hatching to a chick and an adult bird.
It’s a spring extension rather than a groundhog activity. Use it separately if your conversation turns to spring animals, keeping clear that it shows birds, not how groundhogs grow.
sun cloud and groundhog
This little groundhog has quite the whiskers! Its face peeks above a brown half-plate, with a bright yellow sun on one side and a white cloud on the other.
I love how the big weather shapes frame the small face. Keep your own scene just as simple rather than adding lots of extra pieces.
word cards and sound games
Want to bring the theme to your writing table? These pages include word tracing, a write-the-room sheet and letter-sound choices.
The groundhog illustrations tie them together.
Start with “winter” on the tracing card shown here. You could choose just one activity rather than putting every page out at once.
peekaboo plate puppet
Here is another peeking groundhog, but this one has a whole little scene around it. I love the bright blue sky and the two shades of green behind the brown mound.
The green stick extends below the plate in the finished picture. Use your puppet to act out the groundhog coming up to take a look.
heart-shaped groundhog faces
How cute are these upside-down heart faces? The red noses and white teeth repeat the heart shape, with long whiskers drawn across the brown cheeks.
Let each child choose where the pupils go. The different expressions in the row above are part of what makes this display so sweet.
groundhog name graph
This prediction chart may just be my favorite of the bunch. Each little colored groundhog holds a name card, with the cards stacked above yes and no.
After everyone votes, count the two columns together. You could ask which answer has more votes and how many more it has.
footprint groundhog picture
A footprint turned into a groundhog? This is so cute!
The brown print has a little face and paws drawn on it, with green grass around a black burrow opening.
For your own version, leave room above the groundhog for a greeting. I love the blue, white and green lettering against the blue background.
turquoise class voting poster
Last but definitely not least, we have this bright turquoise prediction poster. The pink-nosed groundhog at the top is adorable, with white clouds holding the yes and no labels.
Have children color their own groundhog name cards before placing them on either side. The mix of purple, blue, orange and brown makes this one feel especially personal.
