Looking for an easy crochet blanket for beginners with colors you actually love? Cream ribs, pastel stripes and bright granny squares give you plenty to choose from.
These pictures offer ideas for your first project plus a few more detailed looks to save for later.
You can keep the colors simple or go all out. Check the original pattern for stitches and skill requirements before starting.
One pictured project uses a loom rather than a crochet hook, so that distinction is noted below.
Blanket ideas to inspire your next project
cream ribs
We’re starting off strong with this gorgeous cream blanket. I love the long raised ribs and the simple outline.
There’s plenty of detail without a single color change.
If you’re choosing a first project, an all-one-color look like this is worth considering. Let the pattern guide your yarn and hook choices.

bright squares on black
How cute are these colorful granny squares? Pink, yellow, blue and green stand out against the black joining sections.
Even the little multicolored border gets its own moment.
For your own version, try a smaller selection of colors if this many feels overwhelming. I’d keep the black background.
navy and cream texture
The navy and cream pairing is so pretty in this close-up. You can see little rounded bumps running along the rows, with wide sections of each color.
If your crochet for beginners blanket plans started with plain stripes, save this as color inspiration. Two shades can give you plenty to work with.
tiny brown dashes
This blanket may just be one of my favorites here. I love the rows of little brown dashes across the cream background.
That narrow green edge is such a lovely extra detail.
Try a muted border color if you want something similar without drawing too much attention away from the stripes.
white rounded stitches
Don’t want to add stripes or lots of colors? No problem!
This white blanket has large rounded stitches and a neat edge that follows the corners.
I’d leave this one all white, just like the picture. The raised texture is pretty enough on its own.
pastel rainbow rows
I am obsessed with this pastel combination. The pale pink, mint, yellow and lavender rows look so cute together.
Keep these shades in mind if you want color without anything too bright. For a smaller palette, you might try just lavender and pale yellow.
blue and white ripples
Who else loves these little waves? The blue, pale aqua and white stripes follow the same ripple shape right out to the edges.
This is a look to save if you want to move beyond straight rows. Practice the shaping in the chosen pattern before starting the full blanket.
wide navy stripes
Here’s another view of that navy-and-cream combination, this time spread over a chair. I love how broad the stripes are. You really get to see each color.
Try this palette if your room already has lots of little patterns. I’d keep the stripes wide rather than adding extra shades.
diagonal blue and gray
How pretty is this diagonal design? Little textured blocks form bands of pale blue, cream, taupe and dark gray.
The stepped color edges are my favorite part. Save this one for when you want to explore a block-based pattern rather than assume it uses ordinary horizontal rows.
cream waffle texture
If you love a blanket with lots of visible texture, this one is for you. The cream center has a repeating waffle-like grid, with a wide ribbed border around it.
There’s no need for extra color here. I’d keep both the border and center in the same shade.
golden gingham
This gingham blanket is just so cute. The white, pale yellow and golden-brown blocks make a lovely combination, especially with that golden edge.
If you want to try this look, choose a pattern that explains the color changes clearly. The checks are the detail worth taking your time over.
pink and cream on a loom
Love the pink-and-cream stripes? This picture shows large loops being worked around pegs on a long loom, not with a crochet hook.
It belongs in a different project category.
You can still borrow the colors for a crochet blanket. Try alternating dusty pink with cream while following a separate crochet pattern.
mustard edges and tassels
Those tassels are hard to miss! The dark gray and cream rows look gorgeous with the mustard-colored bands at the ends.
I especially love the mustard wraps around the cream tassels. For a simpler variation, you could keep the colored end bands and leave the tassels off.
earthy patchwork squares
If you are looking for a patchwork idea, then this one is for you. Orange, rust, sage, gray and cream squares sit together with visible contrasting joins.
The rows inside each square add another little detail. Try arranging your own colors before joining so you can see which combinations you like best.
little orange bobbles
How adorable are these raised orange dots? They sit in spaced-out rows across a pale background. The orange reminds me of pumpkins!
This would be a cute fall color idea to save. I’d leave plenty of the pale background showing so each little bobble stands out.
pink and sage stripes
This is another pretty way to bring pink into a blanket. The broad pink and sage sections alternate with white, all finished with a narrow beige border.
I love that the border stays understated. Keep a neutral edge if you want the colored stripes to be the part you notice first.
oversized cream loops
I am obsessed with the oversized texture here. Long raised lines run between rows of big rounded loops, all in the same cream shade.
If this is the look you want, follow a pattern written for that scale. Changing to a much larger yarn isn’t a straight swap for every blanket pattern.
pink scalloped edges
This pale pink blanket is so sweet. The center has a small repeating texture, but those scalloped edges are my favorite part.
Save this if you like a decorative border without lots of colors. I’d keep the scallops in the same pink as the center.
sage and cream bands
Don’t want to go overboard with the details? This sage-and-cream combination gives you broad stripes and an all-over bumpy texture without any tassels or colorful edging.
The green band along the side looks lovely beside the cream. These are two shades I’d happily keep together for the whole blanket.
colorful bands with cream
Last but definitely not least, we have these gorgeous multicolored stripes. I love the dusty pink, purple, blue, green and mustard together!

The cream rows between the colors are worth keeping. If you want your own version to use fewer shades, try picking three favorites from this picture and repeating them.
