The season of muddy sneakers by the door is basically year round at this point, am I right? Every fall people rush out and buy a random basket, shove it by the door and call it a system. It never works.
Shoes end up in a pile anyway within about a week. The basket idea wasn’t bad, it was just missing a plan behind it.
This list is meant to fix that. Every idea below got pulled from hundreds of pins. Only the ones that looked doable, budget friendly or actually realistic in a everyday home made the cut.
No giant renovations here, lol! Some of these use furniture you already own. Others need a weekend and a trip to the hardware store.
Scroll through and find whatever fits your space and your patience level. There’s something here whether you’ve got a tiny apartment landing or a whole mudroom to play with.
Under each idea you’ll find the details that actually matter, plus a link straight to the full tutorial.
ENTRY WAY SHOE SOLUTION IDEAS
Wall Mounted Shoe Cubby
This wall mounted cubby keeps shoes off the ground completely, which is honestly the dream. Each little slot holds one pair upright so nothing gets buried at the bottom of a pile.
It works great in tight hallways since it takes up zero floor space. Paint it to match the trim and it barely looks like storage at all.
- Zero floor space needed
- Holds six pairs upright
- Simple plywood build
Rustic Wood Shoe Bench
A rustic wood bench does double duty as seating and storage. You sit down, pull off your boots, then slide them right underneath.
The reclaimed wood look hides scuffs way better than a painted finish. Add a cushion on top and suddenly it’s furniture, not just a shoe shelf.
- Sit down while you untie
- Reclaimed barn wood look
- Storage tucked underneath
Vertical Shoe Rack Corner
Corners get wasted in most entryways, so this vertical rack fixes that immediately. It stacks shoes in a tower instead of spreading them across the floor.
This one’s perfect for apartments where every square foot counts. Slide it into the awkward gap by the door and watch the clutter disappear, haha!
- Turns a dead corner useful
- Stacks eight pairs tall
- Fits a 12 inch gap
Under Stairs Shoe Storage
That awkward triangle under the staircase is prime real estate for shoes. Built in drawers or open shelves slide into the slanted space perfectly.
This idea works best in homes with a staircase near the front door. It hides the whole shoe situation behind cabinet doors, so guests never see the mess.
- Uses the wasted triangle
- Custom slanted drawers
- Doors hide the clutter
Woven Basket Shoe Bins
Woven baskets are the easiest fix on this whole list, honestly. Group a few by size on an open shelf and toss shoes in loosely.
No sorting required, which is a win in my book. Thrift stores are full of these for a couple dollars each, so this one barely costs anything.
- The lazy afternoon fix
- Thrift store baskets work great
- No sorting required at all
Slim Shoe Cabinet Hallway
A slim cabinet slides into the narrowest hallway without blocking traffic. Some fold out into a little bench, others just have pull down doors that swing flat.
It hides shoes completely from view, which matters if your entry doubles as your living room, lol! Great for renters since most of these are freestanding and need no drilling.
- Fits where nothing else does
- Only 6 inches deep
- No drilling required
Mudroom Shoe Cubbies Idea
Mudroom cubbies with a bench built right in are the setup everyone secretly wants. Each family member basically gets their own slot, which cuts down on the morning scramble.
Add hooks above for jackets and bags. Suddenly the whole entry runs itself instead of turning into a daily disaster.
- One slot per person
- Bench doubles as seating
- Hooks for jackets above
Hidden Shoe Storage Bench
This bench looks totally everyday from the outside, but the seat lifts right up. Shoes go into the hollow storage underneath, completely out of sight.
It’s the these for anyone who hates clutter but has limited floor space. Nobody walking in would ever guess what’s hiding under that cushion.
- Nobody guesses what’s inside
- Lift top storage
- Cushion hides the clutter
Tiered Shoe Shelf Rack
Tiered shelves let shoes lean at an angle so you can actually see every pair at once. No digging through a pile trying to find the left sneaker.
This works especially well for anyone with a serious shoe collection. Stack three or four tiers and suddenly a dozen pairs fit where four used to.
- See every pair at once
- Angled shelves save space
- Fits a dozen pairs easily
Small Space Shoe Solution
Tiny apartments need clever tricks and this idea delivers. A slim rolling cart tucks into the closet and pulls out only when you need it.
It’s narrow enough to fit behind a door too. This one proves you don’t need a big entryway to keep shoes organized.
- Rolls out on casters
- Only 8 inches wide
Closet Door Shoe Organizer
An over the closet door organizer with clear pockets is the fix nobody thinks of first. It hangs on the back of any door and holds a surprising amount.
Kids can reach the lower rows themselves, which cuts down on the daily hunt for missing sneakers. No shame in that.
- Hangs in under a minute
- No tools needed
Boot Tray Entryway Setup
A simple boot tray by the door catches mud, snow and rain before it hits the floor. It’s the cheapest fix on this entire list. It just works.
Add a small rug underneath for extra grip. This one takes five minutes to set up and saves your entry rug from getting ruined every winter.
- Saves your rug every winter
- Catches mud and snow
- Five minute setup
Modern Slatted Shoe Rack
Slatted racks give shoes room to air out, which matters more than people realize. The gaps let moisture escape instead of trapping it against the wood.
The clean lines look modern next to a minimalist entryway. Talk about function meeting style in one small piece of furniture!
- Lets shoes actually breathe
- Slats prevent trapped moisture
- Modern minimalist look
Over Door Shoe Pockets
Over the door pockets are the fix for anyone renting who can’t drill into walls. They hang over any standard door in seconds and hold pair after pair.
Clear vinyl pockets mean you can see every shoe without digging. This one disappears into the back of a closet door completely.
- Renter friendly in every way
Built In Shoe Nook
Last but definitely not least, a built in nook makes the whole entryway feel intentional. Shelves, a bench and hooks all live in one custom wall unit.
This one takes real construction, so it’s a bigger weekend project than the rest. Once it’s done though, the entire house feels more put together instantly.
- The forever fix, not a patch
- Full weekend build
- Combines bench and shelving
