These got picked after scrolling through way too many photo boards, honestly more than I’d like to admit, lol! The goal was to keep only the ones that look natural and don’t require a photographer with a fancy degree.
Some of these work for two best friends. Others are built for couples, siblings or even a random duo who just met at a party.
A few need nothing but sunlight and a wall. Others work better with stairs, a mirror or a cap you’re dying to throw in the air!
Save the ones that fit your vibe and skip the rest. There’s no rule saying you need all twenty, lol!
Under each idea I’ve added the little details that make it actually work, plus what to keep in mind before you snap the shot.
DUO POSE IDEAS
Back To Back Standing Pose
We’re starting off strong with the classic back to back pose. It works for literally any duo, tall or short, matching outfits or not.
I always tell people to cross their arms or just let them hang loose. Either way this one photographs like magic every single time!
Even a plain white tee looks great in this setup.
Piggyback Ride Laughing Pose
How cute is this piggyback shot? The laughing sells the whole thing more than the pose itself does.
I’ve noticed someone always ends up nearly falling over during this one, haha! That’s usually the exact moment the photo turns out best.
Forehead To Forehead Close Pose
This forehead to forehead one is so simple but it hits every time. It works best with eyes closed and a soft laugh.
Who doesn’t love a shot that doubles as a screensaver?
Sitting On Stairs Together
Stairs give you free levels without any effort. One person sits a step higher and suddenly the whole shot feels intentional.
This is the pose I recommend to anyone who says they don’t know how to pose, lol! It basically poses itself.
Jumping Shot Side By Side
Jumping shots are chaos in the best way. Nobody looks graceful and that’s exactly the charm.
I always take ten photos in a row for this one. At least one catches you both mid air looking ridiculous and happy!
Dynamic Action Fight Pose Sketch
If you’re into pose ideas drawing for action scenes, this fight pose sketch is a great place to start. Two figures locked in motion teach you more about weight and balance. That’s more than a dozen still poses ever could!
Sketch the center line first so the twist of the spine reads correctly. That one habit fixed more of my drawings than anything else.
Reference Sheet Hands On Hips
This reference sheet with hands on hips is one every artist ends up needing eventually. It looks basic but the elbow angles are trickier than people expect.
I print a few copies and keep them in a sketchbook. You’ll reach for this one more than you think, haha!
Twisting Dance Pose Reference
Twisting poses are where drawings start feeling alive instead of stiff. The hips go one way and the shoulders go the other.
This is honestly the reference I struggled with most in art class. Practice it enough and it clicks fast!

Sitting cross legged sounds simple but the folds in the fabric make it a great drawing pose ideas exercise. It teaches perspective on the legs in a way standing poses never do.
I grab a mirror and sit like this myself whenever I’m stuck. It beats guessing every time!
Dramatic Cape Flowing Pose
This dramatic cape pose is pure fun to draw. The fabric does all the storytelling while the figure stays relatively still.
I don’t think every drawing needs drama like this. But when it does, this reference nails it every time!
Group Huddle Laughing Together
Group huddles are one of my favorite friends pose ideas because nobody has to think about their face for too long. Everyone just leans in and laughs at something dumb.
Friends and I did this after brunch last month. It’s still the funniest one in the group chat.
Walking Down Street Linked Arms
Walking down the street with arms linked looks easy in photos. It works especially well when nobody’s actually looking at the camera.
The trick is walking naturally instead of posing while walking. Big difference, trust me on this one!
Sitting In A Row Giggling
Sitting in a row and giggling is deceptively simple to pull off. Something about a straight line of people cracking up just works.
I’ve noticed this one requires zero coordination. Somebody says something funny and the camera does the rest!
Leaning Against Colorful Wall
A colorful wall does half the work in any set of instagram pose ideas. Leaning back with one foot on the wall gives the whole photo instant energy.
I have dragged at least four different friends over there to pose against it. Half the block has photographed there by now, lol!
Candid Walking Away Shot
Candid walking away shots feel so easy once you see enough of them. Nobody has to fake a smile or hold a pose.
I just start walking and let someone snap it from behind. The wind does the rest, no shame in that!
Sunglasses Reflection Selfie Pose
Sunglasses reflection selfies are having a real moment right now. The tiny reflected scene in the lens adds this cool detail nobody notices at first glance.
I’ve learned it works best in bright direct sun. Anything cloudy and the reflection just disappears!
Who doesn’t love a hidden little detail like that?
Cap Toss In Air
Is it really graduation without the cap toss? Not in my book! It’s one of the most classic graduation pose ideas out there for a reason.
Throw on three and pick the best frame later. Someone always closes their eyes on the first try, haha!
Diploma Held Up High Pose
Holding the diploma up high is simple but it never gets old. Big grin, arm stretched, done!
I’ve noticed this is the shot every parent asks for first. Might as well get it out of the way early!
Same energy every single time, am I right?
Silhouette Window Light Pose
Silhouette shots against window light look moody without any real effort. This is one of those only fan pose ideas that photographers love recommending because the lighting does all the heavy lifting.
I stand close to the window with the light behind me. The shape says everything the face doesn’t need to!
Mirror Selfie Holding Hands
Last but definitely not least, we have the mirror selfie holding hands. It’s one of the most requested couple mirror pose ideas online and for good reason.
Keep the phone low so it barely shows in frame. This one’s simple, sweet and always turns out better than expected!
