I am currently just laying on my couch here in Idstein, drinking the most chaotic iced brown sugar oat milk latte. The weather outside is actually so weird today. It is kind of sunny but there is this crazy cold wind hitting my windows, so I am just staying inside and avoiding all my adult responsibilities. I figured I would just hop on here because I desperately need to talk about my latest styling obsession. We really need to have a serious talk about the ultimate dramatic staple piece. Yes, I am officially entering my superhero era and talking about the perfect cape top outfits.
I know exactly what you are thinking. Capes? Really, Anne? But hear me out. They are just the absolute easiest, coolest vibe for transitioning between seasons. I am completely convinced I need like five of them in my closet immediately, haha. Let’s look at how to build the perfect wardrobe with these pieces together!
The Ultimate Casual Drape
Okay please look at this first one. I think it is so crazy how a simple draped fabric can instantly make you look so incredibly high-fashion. You literally cannot start building this wardrobe without a good solid base of neutral colors. I love how the tones play together here. It just gives off this very cool, effortless vibe that says you prioritize comfort above literally everything else.
Elegant High Collar Drama
This is exactly the energy I am trying to bring to my life this year. Taking totally boring outfits and adding a high collar just makes everything look so expensive.
I actually have to tell you guys about a massive fashion fail I had recently. Last week, I was walking downtown to meet a friend for lunch. I was wearing this insanely huge, floor-length coat because I thought I looked so edgy and cool. I was holding my massive iced matcha, trying to look like a model off duty. Well, I stepped on a wet cobblestone and my coat got caught under my boot! I totally wiped out in front of like twenty people. My iced matcha went flying everywhere and soaked the bottom of my clothes. I had to limp the rest of the way to the cafe looking like a complete swamp monster. It was so humiliating, honestly.
Preppy Bow Details
I was always so scared of wearing bows because I thought they looked too much like a little kid.
The Perfect Short Cape
If there is one thing you take away from this entire blog post, please let it be this exact formula. A short cape is literally just elevated loungewear. You can be wearing the oldest, most faded jeans you own, but if you put one of these tops on, you look totally intentional. It hides everything and just drapes so beautifully over your shoulders. It is the ultimate life hack for days when you feel bloated but still want to look fabulous.
Minimum Effort, Maximum Style
When the weather is super unpredictable, this is the exact vibe you need. A light layer paired with casual denim is just flawless. It is so easy to just throw on and run out the door. You look like you spent hours getting ready, but it literally took two seconds. I love outfits that do all the heavy lifting for you so you can just focus on having a good day.
Fabulous Wardrobe Updates
Updating your closet does not have to be stressful. Wearing a bold piece like this usually looks really intense, but slipping on some simple shoes softens the whole look instantly. I feel like you could wear this to a casual coffee date and look totally flawless. It is just such a classy aesthetic that works for almost any casual occasion you might have planned.
The Crisp White Essential
This is my absolute favorite way to style anything remotely boring. You just take a basic black legging and pair it with a massive, crisp white top. The contrast just completes that modern city aesthetic perfectly. It looks so clean and put together.
I went back to the reservation for a family dinner recently, and it really opened my eyes. I tried to wear this super complicated wrap blouse to look cute for my relatives. The fabric kept slipping and I was constantly adjusting it while trying to eat. My cousin just laughed at me, went into her room, and handed me her old, beat-up poncho style top. I slipped it over my head and it was like a literal religious experience. I felt so secure and covered, but still incredibly stylish. I spent the rest of the evening chasing my little nieces around the yard and eating frybread without worrying about my shirt falling off once. That was the night I officially became a convert to this lifestyle. Comfort really is everything when you are around family!
Easy Daily Looks
These flowy tops are literally everywhere right now. Pushing the sleeves of your under-shirt up just slightly so your arms can peek out is such a good look. I spend hours scrolling online trying to find the perfect baggy tops to pull this off. You just look so elegant and ready for a productive day of running errands around town.
Silky Satin Beige Dreams
This takes the whole aesthetic and makes it perfect for a slightly nicer daytime event. A soft, silky satin fabric gives off very romantic, bohemian energy and I am totally obsessed with it. You just add some turquoise jewelry and you look totally expensive. It is such a beautiful texture that catches the light perfectly in photos.
French Elegant Design
I love a really structured, elegant piece. It is just the most comfortable way to still look fashionable without using any brain power. Choosing a thick winter fabric instead of a classic summer cotton makes the outfit look so much sleeker and city-ready. I want to look like I am walking through Paris every single day, and this outfit totally achieves that vibe.
Royal Inspiration
We are totally embracing that royal aesthetic this year. Crisp lines, a monochrome color palette, and a perfect drape. It screams wealth and relaxation. I want to look like I spend my mornings going to charity galas, haha. You just cannot go wrong with a classic, tailored look like this when you want to impress someone.
The Cape Blazer Hybrid
This is so cute and playful! Throwing a split-sleeve blazer over a simple tee is already a great look, but adding some tailored shorts just takes it to that next level of boss-girl fashion. It is just so sharp and professional but still really fun to wear out with friends.
I actually tried to make a DIY version of this myself last year because I wanted to be super crafty. I bought some cheap fabric scissors and tried to cut the arms off my dad’s old suit jacket to make it into a trendy hybrid piece. I thought it would be such a cool, unique upcycle project. Well, I totally messed up the seams and the lining was fraying everywhere. It ended up looking like a weird zombie costume gone horribly wrong. I had to hide it in the bottom of the trash can before he noticed! So yeah, maybe I will just stick to buying them exactly as they are from now on. Leave the tailoring to the professionals, guys! It is not worth the stress.
Making a Statement
I am a huge fan of this preppy, slightly moody vibe. A bold statement piece, some dark trousers, and cute boots. It makes you look like you spend all your time reading dusty books in a beautiful old library. The drama of the fabric moving when you walk is just everything you could ever want in a winter outfit.
