Grab yourself a massive iced coffee or maybe a cozy matcha latte, cause we need to have a serious sit-down about hair. Honestly, get comfy, because I have so much to tell you today.
We need to talk about the absolute exhaustion that is heat styling. I am so entirely over spending 45 minutes with a heavy hot tool in my hand every single morning. It is honestly just too much work. And my ends? They were starting to look like literal straw from all the curling and straightening. But every time I tried to just let my hair air dry naturally to give it a break? Yeah right. I looked like a fluffy, chaotic mushroom.
You know exactly what I mean, right? You want that effortless, cool-girl vibe, but instead you get frizz and zero definition.
So picture this. Last month, I had this really cute Sunday brunch planned with Sarah. I hit snooze way too many times on my alarm. Typical me. I jumped out of the shower, threw some random, old serum in my wet hair, and literally ran out the door thinking the warm summer breeze would give me that perfect, beachy surfer girl vibe. Spoiler alert – it absolutely did not. I caught a glimpse of my reflection in the cafe window before I walked in, and I looked like I had been electrocuted. Frizz everywhere. Zero shape. I spent the entire brunch with my hair shoved into a sad, messy bun, hoping nobody would notice. That was my breaking point. I knew there had to be a better way to live my life.
Enter the Scandi Method
Have you noticed how girls in Copenhagen or Stockholm always seem to have that perfectly undone hair? It looks so polished but completely effortless. Like they just woke up, ran their fingers through their gorgeous locks, and walked out into the city looking totally flawless. Well, me and my late-night anxiety went down a massive internet rabbit hole to figure out their secrets. And I am telling you right now, it changed everything for me.
It is all about strategic air-drying. The Scandi method is about minimal effort for maximum reward. It works on pretty much every hair type, whether you got straight hair, soft waves, or curls. It is all about how you treat your hair when it is wet, so that it dries into a shape that actually looks like a professional styled it. And the best part? No heat damage. At all.
I am gonna walk you through exactly how to do it, step by step. It is so easy, you will be mad you haven’t been doing this your whole life.
Step 1: The Prep Starts in the Shower
Okay so, you know how we always think styling happens after the shower? Yeah, no. That is a myth. The style actually starts the second you step under the water. Hydration is literally everything here.
If your hair is dry and thirsty, it will reach out into the humid air to grab moisture, and boom – that is how you get frizz. You need to use a really hydrating shampoo and a super rich, yummy conditioner. But here is the major trick I learned. Do not rinse the conditioner out completely. I know, I know, it sounds super weird and heavy. But trust the process. When you are rinsing, leave just a tiny, tiny bit of that slip in the very ends of your hair. It helps weigh down the frizz right from the start.
And while you have the conditioner in, brush your hair in the shower with a wide-tooth comb. Do not brush it after you get out. Brushing wet hair outside the shower breaks up your natural curl clumps and causes immediate fluffiness. We do not want fluff. We want smooth, polished pieces.
Step 2: The Towel Situation (Crucial!)
Please, for the love of everything good, stop scrubbing your head with a heavy, rough bath towel! You are roughing up the delicate hair cuticle and asking for breakage and frizz.
Instead, grab an old, soft cotton t-shirt. Or a microfiber towel if you want to feel a little more fancy and aesthetic. When you step out of the shower, gently squeeze the water out. Just press and squeeze the shirt against your hair. Treat your hair like it is a super delicate, expensive silk blouse. Do not rub. Do not twist it into a tight turban on top of your head. Just gently blot it until it is damp, not dripping everywhere.
Let me tell you about my absolute worst habit from back in the day, cause it still haunts me. I used to buy those super heavy, sticky gels from the drugstore. I always thought more product meant less frizz and better hold. Nope. I remember going to a house party once when I was like 19, with hair so crunchy, it literally made a crunching sound when I moved my head or touched it. Not a good look at all. A guy I thought was super cute even asked me if my hair was wet, and it had been drying for literally four hours. So embarrassing.
So yeah, the Scandi method is the exact opposite of that. It is all about lightweight hydration, not a heavy, crunchy hold.
Step 3: The Magical Product Cocktail
Okay, so your hair is damp, and it is perfectly detangled from the shower. This is where the magic really happens.
You want to use a lightweight leave-in conditioner spray. Just spritz it lightly all over your mid-lengths and ends. Then, take a tiny pump of a really good, lightweight hair oil. Rub it vigorously between your palms until your hands are shiny and warm, and gently rake it through the bottom half of your hair. Avoid the roots! We want nice volume up top, not a heavy grease slick.
If you have naturally wavy or curly hair, this is when you can gently scrunch the ends upwards to encourage your natural texture. But if you have straight hair, just smooth it down.
Step 4: The Strategic Tuck and Clip
Pay attention, cause this is the absolute game changer. This is the part that actually makes it look like you styled it, instead of just giving up on life.
You know how air-dried hair sometimes dries super flat and weird on top, but then gets huge and puffy on the bottom? We are fixing that right now. Part your hair exactly where you normally wear it. Now, take the front pieces of your hair framing your face, and tuck them tightly behind your ears. Smooth them down flat.
This does something so cool. It gives you that beautiful, soft, face-framing wave right around your cheekbones once it dries. If your hair is stubborn and keeps popping out from behind your ears, use a soft, creaseless makeup clip to hold it flat against your head. You can buy a pack of them for like five bucks online. They leave zero dents in your hair.
Next up: Root volume. To keep the top of your hair from sticking flat to your scalp while it dries, take a couple of small, cheap claw clips. Lift a small section of hair right at your crown, and clip it at the root to hold it lifted up. Do this in a few spots around your part. It takes maybe two seconds but makes a massive, massive difference in how your hair looks at the end.
Funny story – I actually wore my hair in these little root clips and ear tucks to the grocery store the other day. I totally forgot I had them in my head. I was just rushing to get some stuff for dinner. I was standing in the produce aisle, intensely picking out avocados, and this super trendy looking girl tapped me on the shoulder just to ask where I got my cute hair accessories. I was literally in the middle of a messy hair-drying routine! I looked at her, realized I had four random clips sticking out of my head, and we had a really good laugh about it. But hey, at least the clips are cute, right? It’s giving off-duty model.
Step 5: The Waiting Game
This is the hardest part. You have to leave it alone. Do not touch it.
I know it is so tempting to run your fingers through it while it dries. Do not do it! Touching damp hair is the number one cause of frizz. The oils and friction from your fingers break up the smooth groups of hair we just created. Just go do your makeup, answer some emails, watch a TikTok, whatever. Let the air do its job.
I was explaining this to my sister last week. She has totally different hair than me – hers is super thick and wavy, mine is finer. She was so skeptical. She was like, “Anne, there is no way my hair is going to look good without a blow dryer, you are crazy.” I literally forced her to try the ear tuck and clip trick. When her hair finally dried, she called me freaking out because she had these perfect, soft curtain bangs that required literally zero heat. I love being right, you guys.
